About us
In January 2010, as a result of a very quiet spell for struggling singers, Douglas Nairne and Alistair Digges decided that they would create a production of Puccini’s La Boheme to be performed in their home towns and at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Very quickly friends and family became involved as they cast the remaining roles and organised a production team. After the overwhelming success of their initial performances they decided to take La Boheme further and toured around Scotland. The experience the young casts and audiences shared was very special and following the letters from audience members expressing their enthusiasm and desire to see more productions, Opera Bohemia was formed.
Now in its second year, Opera Bohemia exists as a non-profit making organisation, run voluntarily with two main goals.
1. - To bring Opera to more people
2. - To create opportunities for artists in all areas of Opera.
The cast is gathered together in Glasgow for just 7 days before the opening performance in August. The rehearsal period is extremely intense with all costumes, scenery, lighting and props being produced in that time. The group are full of passionate individuals, driven by their love for their art and this enthusiasm is the key ingredient to the results of Opera Bohemia.
"Working with Opera Bohemia was an absolute privelege. This is what opera is all about from a grass roots level. The standard of the production we put together in such a short space of time exceeded my expectations"
